As fans come to terms with the fact that their beloved rock behemoths Muse shall be releasing their new studio album in September 2012, all eyes are on Matt Bellamy & Co. in the hope that they have produced their masterpiece – not just for the fans, but for the world to listen to. In a recent article on Music Scene (which you can click here to view), Muse released a promo trailer promoting their new LP entitled ‘The 2nd Law’, and many fans generated hype that the record is heavily proportioned towards a dubstep sound. While promoting the release of their London Olympics 2012 track entitled ‘Survival’ (which can be listened to below), speaking to BBC Radio 1 earlier this week, Matt Bellamy stated: “We threw that trailer out on YouTube, which has got an excerpt from one of the tracks that’s on the album. We wanted to show that the album’s got lots of different faces.”
Speaking about what fans can expect from The 2nd Law, Matt Bellamy continued: “We’ve tried a bunch of new things, which the trailer gives a glimpse of. There’s only one song that’s like that. We’ve basically tried to do what Rage Against The Machine did with hip-hop in the 1990’s and take a bit of the electronic world, and dubstep, and play it with real instruments. There’s only one track like that, the rest of it is very diverse.”
“There’s a bigger emphasis on groove, we’ve always tried to improve on that with every album and I think on two or three tracks we’ve really nailed it. There’s a couple of tracks where we’ve captured the other side of us too, they’re quite minimal. There’s a really jazzy brass number, I even tried to get a sax solo.”
Muse recorded The 2nd Law over the course of a 6 month period and are apparently listening to the final mixes these coming weeks to help narrow down the official tracklisting. Stay tuned to Music Scene for regular updates on this one.
