M People emerged out of the club scene in Manchester as the eighties turned into the nineties to become the first mainstream dance act. During their ten year reign as one of the world’s biggest dance acts, M People sold more than 11 million records.
The first single from M People, ‘Colour My Life’, was released in 1991, but it wasn’t until the second single, ‘How Can I Love You More’ was released, that the band had top ten success. M People‘s first album, ‘Northern Soul’, got its name from the music genre, a mixture of styles with ingredients from dance and soul. Northern Soul by M People was acclaimed one of the best dance albums in 1992
Northern Soul’s follow-up album, ‘Elegant Slumming’ produced 3 more massive hits ‘Moving On Up’, ‘One Night in Heaven’ and Dennis Edwards’ classic ‘Don’t Look Any Further’. Elegant Slumming went on to win a Brit Award as well as the prestigious Mercury Music Prize.
1994’s album, Bizarre Fruit, their third album release, stayed on the UK-chart for two and a half years. The album featured hits like ‘Sight for Sore Eyes’, ‘Open Your Heart’ and ‘Search for the Hero’, and went on to win the band another Brit Award. M People also played the main stage at Glastonbury Festival in 1994.
M People’s fourth studio LP,’ Fresco’, produced further hit singles in ‘Just for You’, ‘Fantasy Island’ and ‘Angel Street’. M People’s songs have been used in everything from advertising campaigns to films such as The Full Monty and Pret-a-Porter, and the band were even give the Freedom of Manchester in 1999.
Expect hit after hit live in Dublin this Summer when M People return to Ireland for a visit.
